“27 Miles of Scenic Beauty”- The iconic signs were installed in the 1960s by realtors when unincorporated Malibu was 27 miles long.  There were four signs installed: one at the City’s eastern and western borders on PCH, one on Malibu Canyon Rd, and one on Kanan Dune Rd.
When the city was incorporated in 1991 the length was set at 21 miles but the signs remained the same. In 2017 the signs were replaced with new signs which state “21 Miles of Scenic Beauty” which are the signs we see today.
